From Showcase to Supported Service

The part of innovation that begins after the applause.

How the practice works

The innovation pathway covers discovery, exploration, prototype and validation. Transition into service requires an operational owner, support arrangements, funding and a decision about the pilot's limitations. A successful showcase provides interest; it does not provide those arrangements automatically.

A working example

A prototype improves document routing for a small volunteer group. Before wider use, the receiving team tests access, exceptions and support demand. The experiment either becomes a service with a clear owner or closes with its findings retained. An attractive problem may recruit a team quickly; the eventual service requires people who will still maintain it after the excitement has moved on.
