Inside the Chairman’s round
Clarence Biggs brings a measured approach to a game that occasionally resists it.
An orderly opening
Biggs arrived at the practice ground with rimless glasses, a navy cap and a stated intention to keep the ball in play. The Office of the Chairman returned 21 points on the outward nine. His preference for a shorter club from the fairway became the subject of a discussion that lasted longer than the shot.
The turn
A steady back nine lifted the team to 44 points and second place. Biggs was particularly pleased with the approach at the eleventh, where the group chose the visible route around the trees. The strategy attracted broad support after the ball reached the green.
After the last putt
The Chairman joined Sanders and Gallup for the presentation, then remained on the terrace to review the round with partners. His closing observation concerned consistency, preparation and the importance of finishing. The event photographer was able to document all three, although not in the same frame.
