A tradition of appropriate competition
The Enterprise Classic began in 1989. Its institutional memory is somewhat older.
From golf day to enterprise occasion
The first outing brought together four groups, one borrowed trophy and no agreed procedure for returning the trophy. By 1990 the Chairman’s Cup had a permanent name and a temporary storage arrangement. The event grew through referrals, acquisitions and the gradual discovery that several divisions were running their own golf days.
The consolidation years
A single Tournament Office was established to combine invitations, scoring and lunch. Combining lunch proved easiest. Regional events continued, but only the Enterprise Classic retained permission to describe itself as the enterprise event. In 2004, handwritten results were transferred to a spreadsheet whose original custodian remains copied on tournament correspondence.
What has endured
The Classic still pairs people who would otherwise meet only during a quarterly review. The trophy still travels farther than most competitors. The 1997 result remains provisional, principally because the explanation now forms part of the tradition.
