Arrival and assignment
Delegates received a ring binder, a room key and a table assignment at the registration desk. Table assignments were designed to encourage cross-business contact; room assignments were designed before the latest acquisition list arrived. Two delegates from the same business spent the first evening explaining to reception that they had been assigned to each other’s rooms.
The working program
The morning plenary used overhead transparencies. Facilitators asked each table to identify barriers to a common operating approach, write them on cards and place them on the wall. By lunch the cards covered the fire-exit notice. Facilities moved the exercise to an adjacent wall while the program team agreed whether the relocation should be recorded as a change in direction.
The evening session
Dinner was followed by a leadership simulation in which teams allocated a limited budget to a growing enterprise. The team containing three Finance directors requested additional time to agree the assumptions. The simulation ended at 10:40 p.m., shortly after the bar closed. Its debrief praised the team’s disciplined approach to uncertainty.
The record
The closing commitment sheet asked delegates to take one action back to their businesses. Several wrote Align Ahead. The secretariat returned those sheets for a verb. The resulting record informed Usual’s meeting-readiness guidance and established a continuing preference for deciding the wording before assembling the whole room.
