Employment eligibility in the United States
U.S. employment-eligibility checks use Form I-9 to document identity and authorization to work. E-Verify is a separate government service that compares information from the completed form with records available to the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
E-Verify is voluntary for most employers, although requirements can apply to particular employers or contracts. It is not a hiring assessment, a professional credential or a guarantee of a job offer.
What candidates should expect
- Any required eligibility checks are explained as part of the relevant onboarding process.
- E-Verify must not be used to screen applicants before an offer has been accepted.
- Employees choose from the acceptable Form I-9 documents. An employer should not demand a particular document because of citizenship or national origin.
- A record mismatch is not, by itself, a determination that someone is unauthorized to work. Official procedures provide an opportunity to address a mismatch.

Keep personal documents secure
