Strategic Parking Lot Management

Who owns an item after it is parked?

The case for intervention

Items placed in the meeting parking lot were disappearing from view. A recovery program sought to establish whether parked meant postponed, declined or waiting for someone to leave the company.

The work undertaken

Six reviewers met weekly for 52 weeks and spent three hours preparing for each one-hour meeting. They located 284 parked items, including a proposal to reduce the number of parking lots.

The approved outcome

The program introduced a consolidated register of deferred agenda items. All 284 were migrated with their original descriptions; ownership remained with the local meeting chairs.

What stayed with people

“PARKED. NOT FORGOTTEN. NOT OWNED.”
