A common view
Delegates arrived from businesses using three rating scales and five descriptions of outstanding performance. The opening deck promised one clear approach. A handout supplied the conversion table, with two columns still marked subject to agreement.
The calibration exercise
Tables assessed a case study about a colleague who met every target and helped two teams recover theirs. Most proposed the highest rating. The facilitator then disclosed the available distribution and asked them to reconsider the evidence. The second vote demonstrated greater consistency.
The panel
A panel of leaders agreed that performance conversations should contain no surprises. Questions about late changes to ratings were held until the end. The session ran out of time after an extended discussion of manager confidence.
The outcome
The summit endorsed a shared review narrative and a separate calibration stage. The navy tee displays overlapping circles representing businesses, functions and the space in which they reach agreement. Nobody was assigned responsibility for naming the orange dot.
